MESA: Over
2000 years ago, the Hohokam people built the original canal system of Mesa,
Arizona. This allowed this area of the Sonoran Desert to become an agriculture
center. Long after the Hohokam no longer populated this area, early settlers
from Utah slowly began to build Mesa into Mesa City that was officially registered as a town site in July of 1878. In the early 1940s, military personnel began moving in with the opening of Williams Field and Falcon Field.
Mesa is rich in its historic roots and has since grown to be the 3rd largest
city in Arizona, with a population of over 460,000. Located just on the
outskirts of Phoenix, Mesa is a place that attracts families, as well as big
business such as Boeing and Motorola. The Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport
continues to expand and gain attention from various organizations in the
aviation industry. Mesa Community College has their Red Mountain campus located
in Mesa, providing excellence in higher education. Mesa is now recognized for
being part of a well-planned light rail system that makes it possible for
