 CHANDLER:  In 1912, Dr. Alexander John Chandler,
 the first veterinary surgeon for the territory of Arizona, opened up
 the town site office of Chandler. The office, a grocery store and a
 dining hall was all that stood. Soon came along the famous Hotel
 San Marcos, where eventually famous people such as Clark Gable,
 Fred Astaire and Joan Crawford would stay. Chandler has come a
 long way since Model Ts and wagons.

 small farming community to a progressive city with a population of
 240,595, according to the 2006 census recording. Along with a

 Harkins 20 theater movie center features all the latest box-office
 releases. Head to Firebird International Raceway to watch your
 favorite driver hit the track. Take a trip back to the old Wild West at
 Rawhide at Wild Horse Pass. Here you can pan for gold, take a
 wagon ride and watch exciting shootouts. For those hot summers,
 Hamilton Aquatic Center is open to the public with play pool, water
 slides, competing pool and a lazy river.

 The art community comes to life every first Wednesday of the
 month with Downtown Chandler ArtWalk in Historic Downtown
 Chandler. You can view the works of local artists, shop in the retail
 stores and grab a bite to eat. Chandler Center for the Arts brings to
 town world-renown talent from comedians to The Nutcracker, and
 the annual Jazz Festival in the spring is a chance to hear the finest
 of jazz musicians.
