BUCKEYE: In 1877, Thomas Newt Clanton led six men, three women and ten children from Iowa on the journey to Arizona. Clanton and his family became the
first permanent Anglo residents to set up their home in Buckeye. Clanton along
with Malin M. Jackson and William “Bucky” O’Neil, began building the town of
Buckeye (originally named Sydney). The Arizona Eastern Railroad arrived in
Buckeye in 1910, cars, a steam rail line and eventually a state highway by
1015, making Buckeye a center for a business district and other major buildings.
Still keeping the “hometown feel” of days past, Buckeye has
grown substantially and is predicted to have a population of 100,000 by 2010.
Annual festivities bring friends and families out to celebrate events such as
Helzapoppin Days (which began in 1935!), which include a parade, carnival,
dances and a rodeo. Pioneer Days and Countryfest are also local traditions.
Enjoy warm temperatures by going fishing, waterskiing or boating at nearby Lake
Pleasant, or take a hike while taking in the views of 19,840 acres of desert
and mountains. Hit the greens at award-winning golf courses such as Raven Golf
at Verrado or Estrella Mountain Ranch Golf Club. Hunting seasons find many a
sportsman in the area, or shooting at the Buckeye Hills Shooting Range located
in the Buckeye Hills Regional Park.
